Antique 1880s Crazy Quilt with Pillow Covers - Nautical Theme - Antique 1880s Crazy Quilt with Pillow Covers purchased from an estate in Haddonfield, NJ. It measures 93 by 88 inches including the embroidered and cut work trim along 3 sides. The quilt is arranged medallion style with a beautiful sailing ship in the center with a pieced crazy quilt blue sky. It is surrounded by fan motifs and horseshoes. The crazy patchwork is comprised of silk, satin, velvet, jacquard, damask, and other wonderful Fancy fabrics. Almost every seam is hand embroidered. In addition to the single sailing ship is a sailing ship above and another below. There is also an embroidered motif of a man sitting on what appears to be a Crows Nest. There are many hand embroidered motifs as well including flowers, birds, geometric motifs, feather, and Asian woman, fans, vase, and many insects including of course a spider. There is also beadwork, couched metallic threads, hand painting and other embellishments. It is a true work of art. It is hand pieced, hand appliquéd, and hand embroidered. The edges are finished by machine. There is a red cotton reverse, but no batting or quilting. The pillowcases measure about 31 by 36 inches and is trimmed with the same cut work and embroidered edge along all 4 sides of the perimeters of each pillowcase. They are each backed in the red cotton fabric. One features a beautiful spiderweb, lots of spiders, and flowers. The other features two pieced fans and hand embroidered flowers and geometric motifs. Both the pillowcases are in very good condition with only minor condition issues.
