MICHEL SEUPHOR (1901 - 1999) - MICHEL SEUPHOR (1901 - 1999) - ”Symetrie VI” - litho - gesigneerd in potlood - genummerd 99/125 - gedateerd 1970 - 69 x 51 cm Michel Seuphor was an abstract painter, art critic and writer, born on 10 March 1901 in Antwerp and died on 12 February 1999 in Paris. His artist name, Seuphor, is an anagram of Orpheus.  He produced drawings using horizontal lines according to a process he called ‘drawings with horizontal gaps’. An exhibition of his drawings was held in 1954 at the Berggruen Gallery in Paris, thanks to the initiative of Jean Arp. Seuphor created his first collages. Michel Seuphor continued to organise numerous exhibitions, such as in 1949, ‘The First Masters of Abstract Art’ in 1958, ‘50 Years of Abstract Art’ in 1959 in the United States, ‘Construction and Geometry Painting’ and the major Mondrian retrospective at the Musée de l'Orangerie des Tuileries in the same year.  As a visual artist, he participated in numerous group exhibitions in France and abroad from 1933 onwards. He also had solo exhibitions in 1953 at the Berggruen Gallery, in 1959 at the Denise René Gallery in Paris, in Turin in 1967, at the Musée de La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1968, a retrospective at the Municipal Museum of The Hague in 1977 and at the Centre Beaubourg in Paris, in 1981 at the Musée de la Bouverie in Liège, in 1986 at the Galerie Treffpunkt Kunst in Saarlouis, in 1989 at the Museum of Saarbrücken, and in 1994 at La Galerie in Paris.
