A 19th Century Brass Novelty Vesta Case Modelled as a Violin Case - An antique brass vesta case cast in the novelty form of a violin case. The object features a tapered body with a rounded top and a flat underside. A hinged lid is situated at the wider end for the storage of friction matches. The flat base contains an integrated, transversely grooved striker plate. A suspension loop is attached to the upper ridge, allowing the piece to be worn on a watch chain or fob. The body is decorated with stamped stylized foliate motifs and features a small, blank rectangular cartouche on one side intended for an engraved monogram. The item is unmarked.
