1832-1851 US Army COL Cased Epaulettes - Cased epaulette set for a United States Colonel. This particular style was in use between 1832-1851. The pair comes in its original functional case. Black exterior finish with red velvet lined interior. Case is dinged up and has loss of paint. Its dimensions are 6.5” x9.25” x 6.75” tall. The central oval shaped compartment has a removable lid. It serves as a base for the storage of the epaulettes. A swing arm with padded pillow secures the pieces in the case. The epaulettes were manufactured by “Horstmann Brothers & Co New York” as marked on the brass attachment plates along with “LEFT” and “RIGHT” respectively. They are in fairly good condition. The pads are present, but both have shattered silk lining of the pillows. Both have rich Red Moroccan leather undersides with the left example exhibiting curl of the material. The upper visible portions of the epaulettes exhibit quite well. Mostly silver with gold bullion wire eagles, they are complete. The silver bullion main surface and edging is in stable condition with wear commensurate with age. The metal arcs on each side exhibit minimal scratches. The coiled silver bullion threads that hang below are in good condition with minimal kinks or tangles. The outer two layers are larger diameter coils with the innermost layer having a smaller diameter. The gold bullion Colonels eagle has downswept wings and are clutching arrows and olive branch. Federal eagle button on each have “A” in center of chest shield. Each epaulette measures 8” long x 6” wide x 4.5” tall. This is a beautiful set from an exciting period in US history.
