1920s Pima Olla Coil Basket - Pima coiled-construction olla basket circa 1920s. It features a traditional shape with a wide body and narrower slightly flared opening. The basket is made using a coiling technique at the center of the base. This particular piece has five distinct figures (approximately 8” tall x4” wide) around the walls, below the waist and a black zigzag pattern from the waist to the rim. The rim exhibits a whip stitch weave with darker material. Olla baskets like this were historically used by the Akimel O’odham (Pima) people of Arizona for storage. Overall in fair to good shape, with the widest exterior waist, the rim and the base exhibiting loss of weaving. Dimensions: 16” wide (waist) x 11.5” tall x 11.5” diameter opening. Base diameter 7.5”.
