Bidspirit auction | Rare Antique Wooden Organ Figure

Rare Antique Wooden Organ Figure by Ferdinand Demetz (ca. 1900) - Rare Antique Wooden Organ Figure by Ferdinand Demetz depicting a bearded man, extensively patinated with significant paint loss, cracking, and chipping across its surfaces, revealing the underlying wood in many areas. The multi-layered paint includes gold and ochre tones on the face, dark pigments for hair and beard, green and blue on the tunic, and reddish-brown for the cloak. Evidence of past woodworm activity is visible, particularly on the arms and torso. The figure stands on a simple wooden base showing signs of age and discoloration. Internally, the figure features an exposed back, revealing a wooden support structure secured with screws and pins, and elements of a mechanical pivot system, indicating its original function as an animated organ automaton. A notable vertical split is present at one of the arm joints, and a hole in the shoulder exposes further internal workings. The overall condition suggests considerable age and requires restoration. Dimensions (H x W x D): 74 x 26 x 18 cm. Location: The Netherlands, Tilburg.
