Charles Dudley Warner - IN THE LEVANT - Two volumes - many photographs. Boston and New York, 1893

IN THE LEVANT - Journey to the Cities of the Levant [East and Eretz Israel] by Charles Dudley Warner Two volumes with lot of photographs. Houghton Mifflin and Co, Boston and New York 1893. Hardcover with the original dust jacket.

Written and photographed documentation of Charles Dudley's voyage to palestine and the Levant in 1875, to the cities of Beirut, Damascus, Jerusalem, Jericho, Athens and Constantinople. Accompanied by 25 black-and-white photographs, over an entire page, all protected with paper. At the beginning of the first section is a portrait of the author.

The Author Charles Dudley Warner [1829-1900] Friend of Mark Twain, with whom he co-authored the novel "The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today". Was the first President of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and President of the American Society of Social Sciences. He made his journey to the East in the winter and spring of 1875, and sharply recognized the resurgence of industrial life in the East even before the world was aware of the changes taking place beneath the surface. Since he was a writer even before he toured, his descriptions are characterized by high level of writing, accuracy, and great interest around the cities and sites he visited.

Two Volumes, 568 pages. 21 cm. Beautiful original covers with gilt embossing, and the original dust jacket with the name of the book, all in completeness. Gilt top leaf cutting. Very good condition.
