Dreyfus affair - a collection of postcards from the Rennes retrial - 1899

PROCES DE RENNES - Rennes trial. 29 real photo postcards documenting scenes taken during the Retrial of Dreyfus that took place in Rennes in the months of June - November 1899 in which an appeal was filed against his first verdict, his innocence was proven and Dreyfus was pardoned.

The postcards show Alfred Dreyfus and his wife together with her father entering and leaving the courtroom, the military commanders, the prosecution and defense personnel and their relatives, the general public gathered near the entrance to the courthouse, Dreyfus' lawyers Fernan Laboury and Edgar Demange, Picard, Carvalho, Colonel Joest, General De Poadefra and Maurice Palaulog, and others. The series does not include photographs from inside the courtroom because the photographers were not allowed to take pictures inside, so they had to describe the atmosphere in the courtyard of the high school where the trial was held and in Rennes's cafes. Many of the photographs appearing in this series were taken by the photographer Gerschel and published during the trial in these postcards, and they subsequently appeared over the years in countless publications dealing with the Dreyfus affair.

29 Undivided Back postcards. Very good condition. A total of 30 postcards were issued in this series, 29 of them are before us, only postcard #27 in the series is missing.
