Two matchboxes - Allied propaganda against Nazi Germany
Two full matchboxes issued by the Allied Propaganda Department during World War II. Around 1942.
- For VICTORY - BUY WAR BONS and STAMPS - a box full of matches. Box designed in the colors of the American flag and calling on the public to buy bonds and stamps in support of the Allied war effort. On the back of the box is an illustration of an American plane and tank and the inscription: KEEP'EM FLYING KEEP'EM ROLLING - to convey the message that through your donation you are helping the American army in battle to continue its war effort. St. Louis, USA, 1940s.
- CARELESS LIPS... CAN SINK SHIPS - A full matchbox with an illustration of Uncle Sam signals with his finger "Hush", and the inscription appeals to Allied soldiers to be careful what they utter: "Careless lips... can sink Ships" - on the right is an illustration of Hitler and swastika, Benito Mussolini (1883-1945, fascist leader of Italy during World War II), and Hideki Tojo (1884-1948, general in the Imperial Japanese Army and Prime Minister of the Empire of Japan from October 18, 1941 to July 22, 1944. Was responsible for carrying out the attack on Pearl Harbor and effectively directed Japan for most of the Pacific campaign.
