Rare. The front features a portrait of Henri Philippe Pétain against a rural backdrop, with the slogan: “Work, Homeland, Family” and the inscription: “Saving is the cornerstone of national reconstruction, Savings Bank of Châlons-sur-Marne.” Calendar for the year 1942, and on the reverse, details about deposit options at the bank and the operating hours of its branches. During the rule of the Vichy regime (1940–1944), financial institutions in France, including banks, operated under close supervision by the authorities. Some banks adapted their operations to the regime’s economic and social policies, which included antisemitic laws, the confiscation of Jewish property, and asset transfers. In some cases, banks collaborated with the authorities in carrying out these policies, whether willingly or under pressure. Henri Philippe Pétain [1856–1951] was a French military commander and statesman who earned fame in World War I as the defender of France. Following France’s military defeat in World War II, Pétain headed Vichy France, which collaborated with Nazi Germany. Pétain served as a puppet ruler. After Germany’s defeat in the war, he was tried for treason and sentenced to death, though due to his age the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, during which he died.
