January 1945. On the back of the photograph, a handwritten dedication: “A lasting memory for my brother Branko, from your brother Lojib, Novi Sad. January 28, 1945.” During World War II, many children and youths in Yugoslavia joined the ranks of the partisans – the communist resistance movement led by Josip Broz Tito. Some volunteered out of a sense of mission and national responsibility, while others joined after their families were murdered by the Germans, Hungarians, or Ustaše. In the difficult battles waged by the partisans against occupying forces, children served in various roles: messengers, couriers, intelligence gatherers, and at times even combatants. Yugoslav literature from the period memorializes numerous “hero children.” In the city of Novi Sad, which suffered massacres (such as the Hungarian pogrom of 1942), children were also recruited as part of an educational-ideological effort aligned with the vision of a socialist society.
