The Confused Churchill – Will He Invade or Will He Not Invade. German propaganda leaflet against Winston Churchill and the Allies - Anti-British propaganda in the form of a calendar leaf bearing the date March 15, 1944, intended to mock Winston Churchill’s statements about an imminent invasion of Europe (the Normandy invasion) and to portray the Allies as confused and dubious. Rare. This date is “after mid-March” - Churchill had promised that “before mid-March” the Allies would invade Normandy. The promise was not fulfilled on the stated date and is presented here as an empty promise by a cowardly Churchill. On the verso is a purported quotation from a speech by Churchill, dated January 7 (1944), in which he declared that “the invasion will take place before mid-March.” The confused Churchill is shown scratching his head in hesitation – the accompanying text, in colloquial style (French dialect with wordplay), reads: “Am I going? Am I not going?… I’m going? If I don’t go, what will Stalin say? And if I go, what will Hitler do to me?” – portraying Churchill as confused by the orders and coordination between the Allies, fearful of the Nazi enemy, and unable to decide. In the winter of 1943–1944, the Germans already knew that the Allies were planning an invasion of Western Europe, but did not know its exact location and timing. The Nazi propaganda machine circulated such materials in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands to damage morale, provoke laughter at British statements, and attempt to convince the public that the Allies would not keep their promises. In reality, the invasion took place on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), long after “mid-March.” 13x9 cm. Good condition.
