The yellow star is visible on the clothing of those pictured. Netherlands, early 1940s. At the center of the photograph stands the youth counselor, with a yellow star on his clothing. In the background, on a large curtain, the words “The Torah is our life” are written; a Hanukkah menorah is placed at the center, and the flag of Israel is seen on the left.  The yellow star requirement in the Netherlands was imposed by the Nazi occupation authorities on May 3, 1942. Beginning on May 7 of that year, all Jews aged six and older were required to wear a yellow star in the shape of a Star of David on their clothing, bearing the word “Jood” (Jew in Dutch). This obligation marked the beginning of the overt and public segregation of Jews from the rest of the population and was part of the policy of dehumanization and isolation that led to the deportation of approximately 107,000 Dutch Jews to the extermination camps.
