Winston Churchill is the Brave Man to Stop Adolf Hitler – a rare issue of the Warsaw newspaper Welt-Spiegel – May 1939 - A rare issue of the Jewish newspaper Welt-Spiegel (Mirror of the World), published in Warsaw on May 4, 1939. The headline reads: ”דער שטארקער מאן פון ענגלאנד” – “The Strong Man of England”, with a large front-page photograph of Winston Churchill. Churchill is portrayed here as the strongest figure in England, with the article stating that the majority of the British people support him for the role of Prime Minister, and that only he has the power to stop the Nazi beast. Published one year before he was appointed Prime Minister and led the British war effort against Nazism. In Yiddish. Rare. On the front page appears the headline:   “The entire English nation, regardless of party affiliation, wants the diplomat Winston Churchill to be appointed Prime Minister... Against Hitlerism, he is the boldest and bravest minister in the world.” The issue opens with an extensive article on England’s long-standing military tradition. At the center of the paper is a detailed report analyzing the European powers’ reaction to Hitler’s recent speech, in which he threatened to launch a war in Europe. The correspondent G. Weisbard writes that in this speech, Hitler crossed every line with his threats, and that only England has the strength to stop the Nazi beast. He notes that in the last 150 years, this is only the third time that England has initiated mandatory military conscription - the first during the Napoleonic Wars in 1812, and the second in World War I in 1914. He also writes about an emerging alliance of nations being formed between England, France, Russia, Poland, and the United States against Hitler. At the time, Churchill held no official government post - he was serving as a Member of Parliament in the opposition, yet was already seen as a prominent, independent voice on matters of defense and foreign policy. Despite not holding a formal position, he was widely regarded as “the voice of warning” against the rise of Hitler and Nazi Germany. This issue of Welt-Spiegel correctly identified Churchill’s potential as the future leader of the Allied forces in the war against Hitler - exactly one year before he became Prime Minister of Britain, leading a relentless international front against Nazi Germany, delivering speech after speech with unwavering resolve (“blood, toil, tears and sweat”), and symbolizing Britain’s unyielding spirit in the face of Nazi aggression - especially during the Blitz. Also in this issue: A fascinating article on the tight security surrounding Adolf Hitler, aimed at preventing any assassination attempt: “General Hitler is guarded more closely than perhaps any other person in history... When Hitler’s motorcade passes, no one is allowed on the streets, and people are forbidden to look out of windows. Public gatherings are permitted only on adjacent streets... Suspected individuals are arrested and sent out of the city for several days.” The correspondent describes the extensive safety measures taken at Hitler’s mountain retreat, the Eagle’s Nest in Obersalzberg, and more. Also featured is a compelling article on “Einstein, the Greatest Scientist of Our Time” (a piece by M. Oshitzki marking the 60th birthday of Albert Einstein, including documentation of his escape from Nazi persecution) and more.  The Yiddish newspaper ”Welt-Spiegel” was published in Warsaw, Poland, between 1924 and 1939. It was one of the most popular Yiddish newspapers in Poland, with a circulation of over 100,000 copies. The paper covered a wide range of topics - news, politics, culture, and society - with a special focus on Jewish affairs, often criticizing the Polish government’s treatment of its Jewish citizens. Welt-Spiegel was shut down by the Nazis in 1939, shortly after the outbreak of World War II. Many of the paper’s journalists and editors were killed during the Holocaust. 20 pp. Complete issue.
