Passover Haggadah – Jewish Education Committee of the Cape Province – South Africa - Illustrated Passover Haggadah for Children – published by the Jewish Education Committee of the Cape Province – South Africa, C.1950s. Extremely rare Haggadah. Each page of the Haggadah is accompanied by large illustrations alongside the text. On the page depicting the Four Sons, there is an illustration showing the father as an Orthodox Jewish figure embracing his sons, each of whom has chosen a different path in life. The text of “Vehi She’amda” is accompanied by an image of a Nazi officer whipping a hunched-over Jew. The Haggadah combines “antique-style” illustrations with modern ones. It concludes with the song “Simcha Raba, Simcha Raba, Chag HaPesach Hineh Ba…” and “L’shanah Haba’ah BiYerushalayim HaBenuyah VeHashlemah .” Within the South African Jewish community, institutions and organizations were active in preserving Jewish education, identity, and culture through educational activities and the transmission of Jewish tradition to children and youth within the local community. This was a community-based initiative, not a governmental body, dedicated to Jewish education within the communal framework. The Jewish community in South Africa in general, and in the Cape Province in particular, played a significant role socially and economically, and was engaged in Holocaust remembrance, Jewish identity, and culture within the South African context. 19 [1] pages.
