“Thus fell thousands of Frenchmen for their homeland” – two photographs of the execution of resistance fighters – 1943 - Two large photographs documenting a horrifying event: the execution of French resistance fighters by Nazi SS soldiers. Dated on the reverse: March 1943. (Location unknown). One photograph is captioned (within): ”lecture de la sentence” – Reading of the sentence. What appears to be a priest stands before the men about to be executed by firing squad, reading their sentence in their final moments. The second photograph is captioned (within): ”Ainsi tombèrent des milliers de Français pour leur patrie” – “Thus fell thousands of Frenchmen for their homeland.” Uniform size: 18x13 cm.
