Independence Day - An Illustrated Booklet for Children - David Gilboa - “The dearest and most joyful holiday we have is Independence Day” - an illustrated booklet for children with educational stories about the return of the people of Israel to their land, the struggle for Israel’s independence, and the new holiday - Independence Day. Edited by Y. Yinon, with color illustrations by David Gilboa. Published by “Parparim Booklets for Children” [early 1950s]. At the opening of the booklet: “Independence Day is a new holiday. Throughout the thousands of years of our exile we did not know such a holiday. Even upon our return to our land we did not know its like. For strangers ruled in our land. But behold, the State of Israel has arisen. Our land, the land of our birth, has returned to us - it is once again ours…”. Further on appears a story told by Dalia’s grandfather about the suffering of the Jewish people in exile for two thousand years, about the cultivation of the lands of the Land of Israel and the building of the settlements, leading up to a free and independent state “Surely we must give thanks for this to those first builders!”. The story “Amichai Remembers” tells of the British rule in the country, how they prevented ships of Jewish immigrants from reaching the shores of the land, as well as of the “Arab planes” that dropped bombs on the Jewish community on the day the state was declared: “On that day the British left our land and the State of Israel arose. The Arabs were angered by this. They opposed our state, wished our land to be theirs, and they declared war upon us”. Yet the small and brave army of Israel struck the Arab multitudes a decisive blow “and then flags were raised in the streets of our cities and villages”. At the end of the booklet appear the emblems of the IDF branches, and on the back cover “Make Yourself a Toy” - for creating two cards that form the emblem of the State of Israel. In the center of the booklet are images of Herzl, Ben-Gurion and Chaim Weizmann alongside the symbols of the Twelve Tribes, the state emblem, and the flags of Israel. 14 pp. Very good condition.
