The obligation to wear the yellow badge was imposed on the Jews of Germany in September 1941. According to the regulations of the German Reich from 1938, every Jew in the territory of German occupation was required to wear a yellow badge. The badge was designed in the shape of a Star of David with the inscription jude inside it, and the lettering was usually in a font that appeared to be taken from ancient books. Its purpose was to mark the Jews, to distinguish them from the local population, and to humiliate them. According to the instruction, the badge was worn on the garment on the left side of the chest, or on the right arm below the armpit. Jews who forgot the badge when going out into the street, or whose badge did not comply with the regulations, were officially subject to fines and imprisonment, and execution without trial by immediate shooting. In her diary 'Warsaw Ghetto', Mary Berg wrote that the Jews were particularly careful to keep the armbands and yellow badges as clean as possible, ”since the Germans show special 'sensitivity' on this point.
