Postcards mocking Adolf Hitler. France, on the eve of World War II - Six postcards mocking Adolf Hitler, France 1939 - on the eve of World War II. On the reverse: “Printed in France, ” published by “P-C Paris” (a Paris-based publisher active in the 1930s - 40s that produced postcard series, many of them political and satirical), and also marked: “Visa Censure” - indicating censorship approval shortly before the outbreak of the war, when such materials printed in France were subject to review. The postcards include: The Nightmare of Adolf Hitler, King of Criminals - Hitler confronted by various would-be assassins preparing his coffin; The Bloodthirsty Madman - an illustration of Hitler chained, with the caption “Soon we shall see him in shackles”; Radio Stuttgart Spreading Lies in the Name of Adolf Hitler - “the traitor from Stuttgart”; Hitler depicted as bloodthirsty, with a knife in his mouth, standing over skulls of victims: “Millions of mothers weep for their children... the greater the crime, the greater you believe yourself to be...”; a postcard criticizing the policy of appeasement by European powers toward Nazi Germany in the 1930s - at each stage, after Germany received another territorial or political concession (Austria – the Anschluss; Czechoslovakia – the Munich Agreement; and so on), it was believed that “this is the end, ” that Hitler had no further demands, yet in reality, as the illustration shows, each concession only led to the next stage of aggression; and The Prey and the Shadow - Hitler holding the skeleton of the “dove of peace” and a broken olive branch, with a looming shadow symbolizing his true intentions.
