This took place during Begin’s visit to Birch Lodge at Camp David, in the presidential cabin near Thurmont, Maryland, on September 13, 1978 - the visit during which the Camp David Accords were signed. Rosalynn Carter was one of the most influential figures in the White House, far beyond the symbolic role of First Lady. During Carter’s presidency, she participated in policy meetings, advised him on sensitive matters, and was regarded as a full political partner. She devoted her life to advancing mental health in the United States, a field that was then nearly taboo, and worked to change legislation and public awareness, with an emphasis on patients’ rights and improving conditions of care.
