The decree ordering the Jews of Holland to wear an identifying mark was issued on April 29, 1942, following the “first LiRo decree” [De eerste LiRo verordening] of August 1941 for the confiscation of Jewish property. The obligation to wear the yellow badge came into effect on May 4, 1942, shortly before the beginning of the deportation of Jews to the extermination camps in Eastern Europe in the summer of 1942. The badge, a yellow Star of David with the word ”Jood” (”Jew” in Dutch) at its center, was ordered to be sewn onto clothing on the left side of the chest, at the level of the heart, so that it would be visible in public. Jews who were caught without the badge were sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment. 12x11 cm. Stains. Good condition.
