Victory in Europe Day was marked on May 8, 1945, following the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. Across London, Paris, and New York, spontaneous celebrations erupted: crowds poured into the streets, and flags were raised everywhere. For the Allied powers, this marked the end of the fighting in Europe.
