״Father will never come back״ - A German propaganda leaflet dropped from airplanes. 1940s - ״Father will never come back״ - a double-sided German propaganda leaflet dropped from airplanes over concentrations of United States forces at the front, in order to instill fear in the hearts of the soldiers. 1940s. On the front, an image of a small child rubbing his eyes in sorrow, with the caption: “?...When”. On the reverse: “When will your child wake up and hear from his mother: ‘Father will never come back…?’”. On the back appears the code Y.W.C. 09-31, which was used by German propaganda units (such as the Propaganda-Kompanie) to catalog leaflets dropped from airplanes or fired in special artillery shells over enemy lines. This leaflet was designed by German psychological warfare units and dropped over American positions during the first month of the invasion in the European theater in Normandy, France. There, the Germans desperately attempted to induce desertion among soldiers or to lower their motivation to fight. These propaganda leaflets were rolled into artillery shells and exploded over American positions, dropped by aircraft, or simply left in places where American soldiers would find them.
