A wooden hammer with numerous nails embedded in its head, used by the Nazis for crushing prisoners’ limbs in the torture “Bunker” at the Dachau death camp. Dachau concentration camp, established in March 1933, served as the “prototype” and model for all the concentration camps later established by the Nazis. While the camp became notorious for its brutal medical experiments and inhuman conditions, the “Bunker” (Kommandanturarrest) represented the very peak of repression and terror within the camp system. Located behind the administration building, near the southern fence of the camp, stood the “Bunker” — a special detention facility intended for isolation, brutal interrogations, torture, and intensified punishment of prisoners considered “dangerous” or accused of violating the camp’s draconian disciplinary regulations. Torture, executions, flogging with whips, and suspension hangings were carried out inside the Bunker. Some of the prison cells were standing cells, in which prisoners were forced to remain standing in darkness for up to 72 consecutive hours. The interrogation bunker was deliberately isolated so that the prisoners’ screams could not be heard outside. On the eastern side of the Bunker courtyard, the SS established an execution area separated by a wall, containing a firing squad site as well as execution stakes. Provenance: Private collection.
