”In Action” - Special Issue Marking the First Anniversary of the Liberation of Haifa by Haganah Forces During the War of Independence. April 1949 - Bamivtza (”In Action”) – For the Day of Haifa's Liberation – A special issue published on 13 Nisan 5709 (April 12, 1949), devoted entirely to marking the first anniversary of the liberation of the city of Haifa during the battles of the War of Independence. Rare. At the beginning of the issue, under the heading ”Order of the Day on the Anniversary of the Liberation of Haifa, ” appears a message by Major General Moshe Carmel, Commander of Front A: ”Haifa, the city of the future... was liberated by us in a powerful and overwhelming offensive one year ago, on the eve of the Festival of Freedom, in the midst of the great war that engulfed the entire country. With the sudden withdrawal of the British from the city on 12 Nisan 5708, we found ourselves face to face with the Arab enemy in Haifa and its numerous bases outside the city, under the most perilous and severe circumstances... In a large-scale operation, meticulously planned and carried out by the efforts of many fighters, we defeated the enemy in battle and liberated the whole of Haifa, making it a fortress of Hebrew revival and a stronghold of our independent state...” The message goes on to describe the heroism of the Haganah fighters in the liberation of the city. The issue continues with a detailed account of the Battle of Haifa, including the capture of the Lower City, the battle for the Burj, excerpts from the notebook of a Haganah fighter, Kol Yisrael announcing that Haifa had been liberated by the Haganah, extracts from the Haganah commander's Orders of the Day, a photograph of the draft armistice terms, pages from a battle diary, the campaign for control of the roads, a map entitled ”From the Liberation of Haifa to the Conquest of the Galilee, ” and more. The publication is illustrated with photographs of the defenders and fighters who took part in the liberation of the city, the surrender of the Arab enemy, Haganah attack positions, and more. The cover design, depicting Haganah fighters against the backdrop of Haifa's Old City, was created by the artist Yossi Mendele. 24 pages. Tears and losses to the edges of the wrappers.
