An official memorial prayer service marking the conclusion of the shivah following the death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who passed away on April 12, 1945, only a few weeks before the surrender of Nazi Germany and the end of the war in Europe. The booklet contains the order of the special memorial service held in his honor, including the recitation of Psalms: ”Ashrei Ha-Ish Asher Lo Halach, ” ”Mizmor: Mi Yagur Be'Ohalecha, ” and ”Hen Le-Tzedek Yimloch Melech.” According to the printed program, these were followed by a eulogy delivered by the Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel, Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog (not included in the booklet), the Tzidduk Ha-Din prayer, and a special memorial prayer for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, commemorating his kindness toward the Jewish people during the darkest years of the Second World War: ”Upon the death of Your servant, whom You chose to place upon the exalted throne of the Presidency of the United States, and whom in Your grace You raised to become one of the great leaders of this generation. He was a man distinguished above multitudes... Remember his kindness and his faithfulness toward the People of Israel who dwelt under the banner of his government in full freedom. Remember his zeal on behalf of our oppressed and despoiled brethren, and for their innocent blood shed by the ruthless oppressor. Remember his steadfast devotion to the deliverance of Israel from the hands of its persecutors throughout the lands of its dispersion, and all that he did to help Your people return to the land of their ancestral inheritance, which in Your great mercy You bestowed upon them as an everlasting possession...”. The service concludes with ”Shir LaMa'alot” and ”Adon Olam.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt [1882–1945] was one of the most influential presidents in the history of the United States and the only one to be elected to four terms in office, leading the nation from 1933 to 1945. He guided the United States through its two greatest twentieth-century crises: the Great Depression and the Second World War. For the Jews of his generation, and especially for the Yishuv in the Land of Israel, Roosevelt was regarded as the foremost leader of the Allied powers fighting Nazi Germany. He mobilized America's vast economic and military strength to defeat the Third Reich. His death, only weeks before Germany's surrender, was widely perceived as a profound tragedy - the loss of a statesman who passed away just before witnessing victory and the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. Roosevelt surrounded himself with prominent Jewish advisers and associates, including Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr. and Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter. He enjoyed overwhelming support from Jewish voters in the United States and on numerous occasions expressed sympathy for the Zionist cause and for the establishment of a Jewish refuge in the Land of Israel. In January 1944, following sustained public pressure, Roosevelt established the War Refugee Board. Operating with American government support, the Board played a direct role in rescuing tens of thousands of Jews during the final stages of the war, including through its financial backing of Raoul Wallenberg's rescue operations in Hungary.
