The principal units responsible for documenting, photographing, and producing Nazi propaganda material in the occupied territories and the ghettos were the Propaganda Companies (Propaganda-Kompanien - PK). These units formed an integral part of the military and propaganda apparatus of the Third Reich, comprising professional photographers, journalists, cinematographers, and radio personnel who were dispatched to document the war and the local populations living under Nazi occupation. The visual material produced by PK personnel in the ghettos, which deliberately portrayed Jews in degrading living conditions, extreme poverty, and appalling sanitary circumstances that had in fact been imposed upon them by the Nazis themselves, was forwarded to Joseph Goebbels's Ministry of Propaganda. From there, the photographs and films were distributed to major antisemitic propaganda newspapers and media outlets, foremost among them the notorious weekly Der Stürmer, edited by Julius Streicher, which made extensive and highly distorted use of these images to depict Jews as ridiculous, threatening, and subhuman as part of the regime's systematic campaign of antisemitic hatred.
