The front of the matchbox features the official poster image of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, designed by Franz Würbel, depicting a classical Greek athlete wearing a laurel wreath against the backdrop of the five Olympic rings, with the silhouette of the Brandenburg Gate and the Quadriga (the four-horse chariot) behind him. The ”GERMANY BERLIN·1936” typography is characteristic of souvenirs produced for the Anglo-American market. The 1936 Berlin Olympic Games were among the most prominent international sporting events of the interwar period, held at a time when Germany was already under the rule of Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime. The Games, which took place from August 1 to 16, 1936, were intended not only as a celebration of international sport but also as a showcase for Germany's strength, organization, and modernity before the world.
