Photo Album of Dachau Concentration Camp – Harsh Photos – Special Allied Edition Published at the End of the Second World War - Album Conc. Camp Dachau – Photographic album of Dachau Concentration Camp. The album was produced at the initiative of the Comité International de Dachau (International Dachau Committee) with the approval of the American Military Government, with the purpose of presenting to the world the atrocities committed in the camp and serving as one of the earliest memorial publications issued immediately after the end of the war. All photographs are captioned in four languages: English, French, German, and Polish. Dachau, C. 1945. The album contains 40 photographs documenting harrowing scenes from the camp, including: the firing range, the site of executions by shooting; the crematorium; the gas chamber; murdered prisoners being transported on a cart; the bodies of prisoners who died of starvation; prisoners who perished from exhaustion; the removal of victims' bodies on railway wagons; piles of corpses outside the crematorium; prisoners placing a body into the crematorium; urns containing the ashes of victims; the camp entrance gate; liberated prisoners cheering their American liberators; an aerial view of the camp barracks; and the camp kitchen. The album also includes photographs taken in the courtroom during the Dachau Trials: the prosecution; representatives of the participating nations; a witness identifying Camp Commandant Martin Gottfried Weiss (1905–1946), the last commandant of Dachau Concentration Camp, who was captured near Munich while fleeing the camp on April 29, 1945, by Corporal Henry Senger of the U.S. Army's 292nd Field Artillery Battalion. Weiss was tried during the Dachau Trials, which opened on November 13, 1945, convicted of crimes against humanity, and executed by hanging at Landsberg Prison on May 29, 1946. Another witness identifies Camp Leader Rupert. Also shown is the Nazi criminal Prof. Klaus Karl Schilling, head of the malaria research station (1871–1946), a German physician notorious for conducting medical experiments on Dachau prisoners. Between 1942 and 1945, Schilling's attempts to develop a cure for malaria led to experiments on more than one thousand inmates. Convicted of crimes against humanity after the fall of Nazi Germany, he was executed by hanging in 1946. Additional photographs show a witness demonstrating the punishment of twenty-five lashes administered to prisoners inside the courtroom, the reading of Weiss's death sentence, the pronouncement of sentences upon other defendants, and more. The cover illustration depicts the famous entrance gate of Dachau Concentration Camp, behind which rises a fan of national flags representing the countries from which tens of thousands of prisoners were deported to the camp. Among them are the flags of the United States, the Soviet Union, Free France, Great Britain, Poland, Yugoslavia, and others, symbolizing the international solidarity of the survivors and the Allied victory over Nazi Germany.
