”Give Us Aircraft!” – Early and Rare Poster Issued by the General Council for Hebrew Aviation in the Land of Israel. Land of Israel, C. Early 1940s - Recruitment poster issued by the General Council for Hebrew Aviation in the Land of Israel, C. early 1940s, intended to enlist public support in the Yishuv for the development of an independent Jewish air arm. Rare. At the top of the poster appears the slogan: ”A nation is built by three means: by roads on land, by routes at sea, and by paths in the air, ” a paraphrase expanding the Zionist ideal of conquering labor into the new dimension of aviation. At the center is a striking red illustration of a pilot pointing skyward toward four aircraft, beneath the dramatic headline: ”Give Us Aircraft!” The appeal below - ”Join the Friends of Hebrew Aviation. Answer the call of those who have enlisted!” - urges the citizens of the Yishuv to become official members of the organization and contribute funds for the purchase of aircraft and the training of Hebrew pilots. Behind the lower text appears the purple circular emblem of the General Council for Hebrew Aviation, incorporating wings and a propeller. The General Council for Hebrew Aviation in the Land of Israel was established in 1937, during the Great Arab Revolt, as part of the Yishuv's broader ”state-in-the-making” strategy of creating the institutions of an independent nation in every sphere of life, including aviation. The organization was founded upon the strategic understanding of the Yishuv's leadership that control of the skies was not merely a technological or commercial matter, but a vital national and security asset. It united under one umbrella the pioneering aviation bodies then operating in the country, foremost among them the Aviation Club of Israel and the Aviron airline. Through a network of members and local branches, it financed the acquisition of light training aircraft, trained dozens of the first Hebrew male and female pilots, and developed civilian landing fields throughout the country. The Council's organized efforts, combining national vision with rigorous practical training, laid the direct human and operational foundations for the Haganah Air Service (Sherut Avir), from which the Israeli Air Force would emerge upon the establishment of the State of Israel.
