Collection of Postcards – Rare Photographs of Émile Zola. C. 1900 - 10 Real photo postcards of the French novelist and public intellectual Émile Zola (1840–1902), including several rare examples. The collection features close-up portraits of Zola from various angles, photographs of him in his study, and other images. The postcards were published during the years in which Zola stood at the forefront of the campaign in defense of Alfred Dreyfus, or shortly thereafter. Various publishers, C. 1900. Some postcards were postally used and bear handwritten messages from the senders. Émile Zola left an indelible mark on history when he devoted the full weight of his literary reputation and public standing to the cause of Alfred Dreyfus. On January 13, 1898, he published his celebrated article ”J'Accuse...!” in the newspaper L'Aurore - an open letter to the President of France in which he courageously denounced the military leadership and the judicial establishment for their cover-up, institutional antisemitism, and the wrongful conviction of an innocent officer. This dramatic act cost Zola a criminal libel conviction, a substantial fine, and forced exile in England. Although it deeply divided French society, it transformed the Dreyfus Affair from a judicial miscarriage into a matter of national conscience. Zola's determination ultimately helped pave the way for Dreyfus's exoneration. Seven postcards have undivided backs. Four were postally used. Overall good condition.
