The Declaration of the British Government – Decorative Broadside Presenting the Text of the British Commitment in the Balfour Declaration. New York, 1917 - Important trilingual historical broadside presenting the central passage of the Balfour Declaration, as published by the British Government and its Foreign Secretary, Arthur James Balfour, in November 1917. Published by the Mizrachi organization in New York. Hebrew, Yiddish, and English. Rare. The broadside reproduces, in three languages, the section of the Balfour Declaration containing the British Government's commitment to the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in the Land of Israel, together with its assurance that this policy would not prejudice the civil and religious rights of the country's non-Jewish communities. The Hebrew text appears prominently at the top in large bold letters against the background of a Star of David, while beneath it are printed side by side the original English text and its Yiddish translation. The broadside was printed and distributed by the American Mizrachi movement from its offices at 86 Orchard Street, New York, as part of its educational and fundraising efforts on behalf of the Zionist cause following this landmark diplomatic achievement. The text is enclosed within an ornate geometric border incorporating classical architectural motifs in the corners and center, giving the document a formal and ceremonial appearance befitting what was widely regarded as the beginning of international recognition of the Jewish people's right to a national home in the Land of Israel. 28×22 cm.
