Libyan Jewry - Prayer for Israel's Independence Day - The Official Order of Service for Independence Day in the Jewish Communities of Libya - Poster - Prayer for Israel's Independence Day, 5 Iyar - The Official Order of Service for Independence Day in the Jewish Communities of Libya. Published by the Chief Rabbinate and the Rabbinical Court of Justice of Tripolitania, Zerad Press. Tripoli, Libya, 5 Iyar 1949. A rare historical poster published by the spiritual leadership of Libyan Jewry, headed by the eminent rabbinical judges Rabbi Shlomo Yeluz, Rabbi Hai Gabizon, Rabbi Yissachar Hakmon, and Rabbi Kammus Nahaisi, on the occasion of the first anniversary celebrations of the State of Israel. The poster presents the complete order of service established for the Jewish community of Tripoli for Independence Day, drawing a compelling parallel between local history and the national redemption: at the top appears the date 9 Av 70 CE as the symbol of the ”Exile of Israel from their Land, ” opposite 5 Iyar 1948, marked as the day of the ”Redemption of Israel and their Return to their Land.” The body of the poster contains a detailed halachic ordinance prescribing the removal of three Torah scrolls and the reading of special Haftarot, together with a festive prayer for Independence Day expressing gratitude for the establishment of the State and invoking blessings upon its leaders, its government, and the soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces: ”Let us give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this great day, the Independence Day of Israel. Fortunate are the leaders who stand at the head of Israel, who have brought this generation to this moment... Our heartfelt blessings are joyfully extended on this Independence Day to Israel, to the President of Israel, to the Prime Minister of Israel, and to all the ministers of the government... and to those whose sacred blood was not shed in vain, who by their heroic deaths and extraordinary self-sacrifice bequeathed life to us on this sacred Independence Day for the revival of the nation...”. It also includes the full text of the ”Prayer for the Welfare of the State of Israel” as instituted by the Chief Rabbinate in Eretz Israel. At the bottom, the poster bears the official ink stamp of the Chief Rabbinate of Tripoli. A moving historical testimony to the profound Zionist commitment of Libyan Jewry and to the days of national exaltation experienced by the community on the eve of the mass immigration to Israel. 34x27 cm.
