A unique Yiddish booklet published in neutral Switzerland during the height of the Second World War, marking the first anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (April-May 1943). The booklet includes: Baym Keyver fun Undzere Kedoyshim (”At the Grave of Our Martyrs”) – an opening essay published on the first anniversary of the heroic uprising of the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto, describing their decision to take up arms against the Nazi war machine; Kinderlekh in Farziglte Vagonen (”Children in Sealed Railway Cars”) – a heart-rending elegy by the poet Malka Lee, portraying the fate of Jewish children being transported to their deaths; Dos Yidishe Geto in Varshe (”The Jewish Ghetto in Warsaw”), a detailed and harrowing historical survey of the ghetto's early days, from the beginning of the occupation in 1940, the persecution of religious life, roundups for forced labor, systematic economic plunder, and the construction of the ghetto walls; testimonies from the major Aktionen and deportations – an early documentary account written shortly after the events themselves, presenting detailed testimony from the tragic days beginning in July 1940 and thereafter, including a description of the Umschlagplatz, the hospitals within the ghetto, and the daily deportation of thousands of Jews to the extermination camps, and more. One of the earliest and most important commemorative works printed during the war years in Europe documenting the destruction of Polish Jewry and the heroism of the uprising. Extremely rare.
