Antisemitic regulations imposing severe restrictions on the freedom of movement of the Jewish population in the city of Radom, within the territory of the General Government. The poster prohibits Jews from entering designated public areas (Section 1): effective November 1, 1940, the Jewish population (”jüdischen Bevölkerung”) was strictly forbidden to enter or pass through the following locations: (a) Adolf Hitler Square (Adolf Hitler-Platz); (b) Town Hall Square (Rathausplatz) – on the side where the Town Hall building was located; (c) Reich Street (Reichsstrasse), along the section between Walowa Street (Walowa) and 1 May Street (1. Mai-Strasse). The notice also imposes a curfew during specified hours on Reich Street (Section 2): on this section of Reich Street, the prohibition applied during the following hours: (a) Monday through Friday: between 13:00 and 15:00, and between 19:00 in the evening and 05:00 the following morning; (b) from Saturday at 13:00 until Monday at 05:00 in the morning (an extended weekend curfew). The notice further states that members of the Council of Elders (Ober-Ältestenrat / Judenrat), as well as Jewish residents actually living on these streets or squares, could apply for a special movement permit. Applications were required to be submitted through the Judenrat to the office of Kujath. Violators of these regulations would be severely punished by a monetary fine or imprisonment (”mit Geldstrafe oder Haft bestraft”). The poster is signed by Kujath, the authorized representative of the Head of the Radom District for the City of Radom (”Der Beauftragte des Distriktschefs für die Stadt Radom”). This poster documents what was, in effect, the intermediate stage in the persecution of the Jews of Poland, only a few months before their final confinement behind the walls of the ghettos. By late 1940, the Nazi authorities in Radom had adopted a policy of gradual spatial exclusion and dispossession. It began with the confiscation of Jewish property and businesses, continued with the compulsory identification of Jews, and reached the stage documented by this poster, their physical exclusion from the center of urban life, the principal public squares, and the main commercial streets, in order to create complete separation between them and the Polish and German populations. Approximately six months after the publication of this poster, in April 1941, the process was completed with the establishment of the Radom Ghetto and the total confinement of the city's approximately 30,000 Jews within its walls. On the reverse appears the official circular purple ink stamp of the local Nazi administration (the municipal authority) of the period:DER BEAUFTRAGTE DES DISTRIKTSCHEFS FÜR DIE STADT RADOM (The Authorized Representative of the District Chief for the City of Radom) – this stamp authenticates the poster as an original issued directly from the official government distribution office in Radom.
