An official bilingual broadside in Hebrew and Ladino calling for public awakening, political unity, and mass participation by members of the Sephardic community in the elections for the ”Constituent Assembly.” Published by the Committee of All Sephardic Communities in Jerusalem / Komisyon di Todas las Komunidades Sefardiadas, Jerusalem, C. 1948/1949. A fascinating historical document from the period of the establishment of the State of Israel, reflecting the social, communal, and political struggle of Sephardic Jewry in Jerusalem and Eretz Israel during this decisive era. The broadside calls upon the Sephardic public to emerge from the civic apathy that had characterized parts of the community in previous years. Its authors lament that the voice of the Sephardic community, which had been among the pioneers of the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel, had ”fallen silent, ” and that because of insufficient participation in the previous municipal elections in Jerusalem, the community had lost much of its strength and influence. The broadside passionately emphasizes the importance of the forthcoming elections to the ”Constituent Assembly, ” described as the supreme body that would determine the fundamental regulations of the Jewish community, organize its institutions, and build the country. A special and emphatic appeal is directed to the women of the community, declaring unequivocally that the right to vote is granted to every man and woman aged 20 and above, and that it is the duty of women to go to the polls and exercise their influence rather than relinquish their rights. The broadside warns against the false promises of other political parties and against splitting the vote, urging the community to vote as one for the Sephardic list in order to ensure proper representation (”that the elected representative shall be one of our own, who knows all our needs”). 31x23 cm.
