The candidates listed on the ballot: Paul von Hindenburg – ”Reichspräsident, Generalfeldmarschall, Berlin” (President of the Reich, Field Marshal, Berlin). Hindenburg was the incumbent president and the clear winner of this election, receiving 53% of the vote in the second round. Adolf Hitler – ”Regierungsrat im braunschweigischen Staatsdienst, München” (Government Councillor in the Brunswick State Civil Service, Munich). Ernst Thälmann – ”Transportarbeiter, Hamburg” (Transport Worker, Hamburg). In order for Hitler, who had originally been an Austrian citizen and had remained without German citizenship for years, to stand as a candidate in the German presidential election, members of his party arranged for him, in February 1932, to receive a nominal appointment as a government councillor in the State of Brunswick (Braunschweig). This appointment automatically conferred German citizenship upon him, making his candidacy possible. In the second round, Hitler received 36.8% of the vote. Ernst Thälmann, leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), received 10.2% of the vote in the second round. (He was later murdered in the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944.)
