Early Means of Payment - The Jewish Community of Miskolc, Hungary. Late 1920s and Early 1930s - Miskolczi Orth. Izraelita Hitközség – Seven early food vouchers issued by the Orthodox Jewish Community of Miskolc, Hungary, during the late 1920s and early 1930s. The vouchers served as internal means of payment and as payment certificates for taxes or fees relating to kosher slaughter and the purchase of kosher meat. Included are: a poultry slaughter voucher (duck/goose) – 1926; a poultry slaughter voucher (duck/goose) – 1927; three meat vouchers – 1927; and two meat vouchers – 1931. All of the vouchers are printed in Hungarian on various colored papers (grayish-green, pink, orange, yellow, and beige), each bearing the official round red ink stamp of the Orthodox Jewish Community of Miskolc (”Miskolci Orth. Izr. Hitközség”) and individually numbered with printed serial numbers. They constitute a rare and vivid testimony to the careful economic administration and communal autonomy of Orthodox Jewish communities in Europe during the interwar period. The vouchers illustrate how the community supervised the kashrut of food, collected internal communal taxes and fees, and regulated or subsidized the kosher slaughtering system and the distribution of kosher meat to its members in a remarkably orderly and well-supervised manner.
