Notice Concerning the Mandatory Registration of Jewish Property (Prior to Their Deportation to the Death Camps) - Cologne, 1941 - An alle Juden in Köln (”To All Jews in Cologne”) - official notice requiring the registration of Jewish property prior to its confiscation by the Gestapo, representing the preliminary stage before the deportation of the Jews to the ghettos and, subsequently, to the death camps. Cologne, 1941. German. Rare. Official notice issued by the Jüdische Kultusvereinigung (Jewish Religious Association) of Cologne on behalf of the German Gestapo. By this stage, the organization had become the coerced and closely supervised successor to the local Jewish community, functioning under compulsion as an administrative instrument of the Gestapo and the Nazi authorities. The notice required all Jews to report and register their personal property - including bicycles, typewriters, and other useful household items. It states: ”According to a communication from our headquarters, the Reich Association of Jews in Germany, Berlin, the following directive has been issued by order of its supervisory authority: Beginning Thursday, November 20, 1941, all Jews (German nationals and stateless persons alike) are required to register the following items: (a) typewriters and duplicating machines; (b) bicycles and bicycle accessories; (c) cameras and photographic film, enlargers, and projection equipment; (d) binoculars.”.  The notice further instructs that each item must be described individually according to its condition, as new, requiring repair, or poor - and specifies that the requirement applies to every Jewish household, even where one spouse is not Jewish, as well as to Jews holding foreign citizenship. Bicycles owned by licensed physicians and by Jews engaged in work assignments were likewise subject to registration. Those requiring bicycles for their work were instructed to declare this, after which such cases would be submitted to the Gestapo for special authorization. The notice required all registrations to be completed by December 5, 1941, warning that any Jew who failed to comply ”would be subject to the most severe penalties.” The most chilling passage appears near the end of the document, where it states that persons designated for ”Evakuierung” (”evacuation”—the Nazi euphemism for deportation to the camps in the East) were required to surrender these items between November 20 and November 25, 1941. During October and November 1941, the first mass deportations of the Jews of Cologne began, initially to the Łódź Ghetto (Litzmannstadt) and subsequently to the ghettos of Minsk and Riga. This document constitutes a stark administrative record of the logistical preparations that accompanied their deportation to their deaths while simultaneously stripping them of their remaining possessions. At that time, Cologne had six synagogues that served as the centers of Jewish communal life, and this notice was directed to the city's Jewish population through its compelled communal administration.
