Roosevelt) ride together in an open automobile from the White House to Capitol Hill for the inauguration ceremony. Photographed on Presidential Inauguration Day - March 4, 1933. Roosevelt signs (on December 8) the declaration of war against Japan, after the Japanese launched a surprise attack on American installations in Hawaii on December 7, 1941.” President Roosevelt signs the declaration of war against Japan on the day following the attack on Pearl Harbor (the famous ”Day of Infamy” speech). Roosevelt extends a warm handshake of greeting to U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull. At the Washington airport, upon Secretary Hull's return from the Allied Conference in Moscow, November 1943.” Together with representatives of Britain, the Soviet Union, and China, Mr. Hull took part in discussions in Moscow on measures to strengthen cooperation among the four powers in the conduct of the war. This was one of the crucial diplomatic events of the war. Cordell Hull flew to Moscow to meet with the foreign ministers of the Soviet Union and Britain (and also signed the Four-Power Declaration, which included China) at a conference that laid the foundations for military and political cooperation among the powers and became a cornerstone in the future establishment of the United Nations (UN) - a project led by Cordell Hull and for which he was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 4. President Roosevelt signing the Philippine Independence Act in 1934, providing for independence in 1946. The Act was signed by President Roosevelt on March 24, 1934, and stipulated that the Philippines (which had until then been a territory under American control since 1898) would receive the status of an autonomous commonwealth for a 10-year transitional period, at the conclusion of which it would attain full independence. Although during those ten years the Philippines was occupied by Japan during World War II, the United States honored its commitment under the Act and granted the Philippines full independence on July 4, 1946. On the reverse of the photograph is a USIS - SERVICES AMÉRICAINS D'INFORMATION (United States Information Service in France) stamp. 5. ”President Franklin D. Roosevelt customarily spent Christmas with his family. Here he is, in 1939, photographed with two of his grandchildren: Franklin D. [Roosevelt III] (left) and John Boettiger Jr.” This photograph was taken in December 1939, when Europe was already engulfed in World War II, while the United States still maintained its neutrality. Warm family photographs of this kind were widely distributed by the presidential press office to convey stability, warmth, and family values to the nation and the world. 6. ”President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Thanksgiving celebration at the treatment center in Warm Springs, Georgia, alongside his wife Eleanor Roosevelt.” The photograph documents Roosevelt's traditional meal at Warm Springs - the therapeutic resort where he established the national foundation for the treatment of infantile paralysis after he himself was stricken with polio in 1921.
