”The Marshal and the Corporal” - press photograph of an early Nazi propaganda poster, shortly after Hitler's rise to power in 1933 - Rare historic press photograph documenting an early Nazi propaganda poster pasted on an advertising column in the streets of Germany, shortly after Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1933. Wide World Photos, March 1933. The photograph documents an election poster depicting the elderly German President, Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, alongside the new Chancellor, Adolf Hitler. The poster bears the famous slogan: ”DER MARSCHALL UND DER GEFREITE” (”The Marshal and the Corporal”). At the bottom appears the quotation placing Hitler and Hindenburg on equal footing: ”Kämpfen mit uns für Frieden und Gleichberechtigung” (”Fight with us for peace and equal rights”). On the reverse of the photograph: numerous archival stamps, including a stamp of the French bureau of The New York Times, and a paper slip describing the photograph (French): ”Le Président von Hindenbourg et le Chancelier Hitler figurent ensemble sur la même affiche électorale avec cette mention: LE MARÉCHAL ET LE CAPORAL” - ”President von Hindenburg and Chancellor Hitler appear together on the same election poster bearing the inscription: The Marshal and the Corporal.” The poster depicted in the photograph was intended to legitimize Hitler's fledgling regime in the eyes of the conservative German public by directly associating it with the military and national prestige of Marshal Hindenburg, a hero of World War I. The contrast between the highest rank (Marshal) and Hitler's modest wartime rank (Corporal) was used by Goebbels's propaganda machine to cultivate Hitler's image as a ”common soldier” representing the people. Size: 16x12 cm. Very good condition.
