Albert Einstein Meeting with Film Star Richard Barthelmess at a Hollywood Recording Studio - 1931 - ”Einstein Studies the Relativity of Sound” - Press Photo of Albert Einstein Meeting with Film Star Richard Barthelmess in Hollywood - 1931 - During Einstein's Famous Visit to California. An interesting photograph documenting Albert Einstein during his tour of the studios to examine firsthand the new sound-recording technology (”talking pictures”), while concurrently conducting research at Caltech. Professor Albert Einstein is photographed alongside silent-film and talking-picture star Richard Barthelmess (1895-1963 - a renowned American film actor, particularly of Hollywood's silent era. He was also among the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927. Two years later, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for two films: The Patent Leather Kid and The Noose) inside a sound-recording studio at one of Hollywood's major film studios (Warner Bros. / First National), with Barthelmess looking admiringly at Einstein. In the background can be seen sound-recording equipment advanced for its time - a Western Electric recording lathe from the 1920s, with a wax cutting disc on the turntable. In the winter of 1930-1931, Einstein visited California, primarily to conduct scientific research at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). During this visit, he toured the Hollywood studios, where he met Charlie Chaplin and key figures in the film industry. On the reverse of the photograph is a label describing the event: ”LEARNING THE RELATIVITY OF SOUND” - a play on words combining the theory of relativity with sound recording. The text reads: ”HOLLYWOOD, Cal. -- Professor Albert Einstein getting a few pointers on the intricacies of sound recording from Richard Barthelmess, famous movie star, when the learned Doctor visited one of the largest studios on the coast.” Size: 22x17 cm.
