Ihud – HaNoar HaTzioni and Akiva Children’s Home – Photographs of Young Holocaust Survivors from Hungarian Jewry at a Postwar Summer Camp - Ihud – HaNoar HaTzioni and Akiva Children’s Home – eight photographs documenting a summer camp for a group of child Holocaust survivors from the “Ihud – HaNoar HaTzioni and Akiva” youth movement in a mountainous region of Hungary after the war. Europe, summer, ca. 1946. The photographs show the young people, some of them very young children, wearing the movement’s uniform in group photographs, hiking through a mountainous area, and carrying a flag bearing a Star of David in its center and the Hebrew inscription: “Children’s Home – Ihud – HaNoar HaTzioni and Akiva.” The children’s home was in fact a residential framework for children and young people, most of whom had been orphaned after their parents perished in the Holocaust. It was run by instructors of the movement in order to rehabilitate the children and provide them with an educational and supportive environment, as well as training in preparation for immigration to Eretz Israel. The activities took place around an alpine lake and amid pine forests. In several photographs, the children are seen aboard an excursion boat on the lake (the word “Budapest” can be discerned on a lifebuoy in one of the photographs, hence the identification of the area as Hungary). Hungary was one of the major centers of Holocaust survivors and orphans after 1945. In Budapest and its surroundings, dozens of children’s homes were established by Zionist youth movements, including HaNoar HaTzioni and Akiva, bringing together child survivors before their departure along the Bricha routes toward the displaced persons camps in Austria, Germany, and Italy. Same size: 8.5×6 cm. Very good condition.
