Urgent Postcard Sent from Łódź to Eretz Israel – January 1938 - Urgent postcard sent from Łódź describing a woman’s desperate situation as she struggled with the decision whether to flee and immigrate to Eretz Israel. Łódź, January 5, 1938. Yiddish. A postcard sent on January 5, 1938, by Ch. Opolion from 11 Bolesława Limanowskiego Street (ul. Bolesława Limanowskiego 11) in Łódź, Poland. Its contents reveal a woman filled with anxiety and in great distress, attempting to make a critical decision about her future. She appeals to her close friends living on Mahane Yehuda Street in Jerusalem – Yehoshua Leib Lew and his wife, Chanele – pleading with them to reply after her previous letters had gone unanswered. She explains that her fate and entire future depend upon the information they can provide her: “I beg you, write me the truth! My whole life depends on you! Shaya, I beg you as I would a brother, answer me truthfully!!! Surely you understand my situation. I am afraid of everything...”. Mrs. Opolion asks what Shaya does for a living, what the employment and livelihood situation is like in Eretz Israel, and what everyday life there is like. In her letter she makes no attempt to conceal her profound fears about the deteriorating situation in Poland (“I am afraid of everything”) and makes clear that her detailed series of questions is intended to help her determine whether she has any economic and practical possibility of leaving Łódź and immigrating to Eretz Israel, or what precisely she should do. [1] postcard, written on both sides. Filing holes. Good condition.
