Antisemitic Mask. Germany, 1930s - Antisemitic mask – the Jew depicted with a demonic face, long nose, and horns. Germany, 1930s. Manufactured in Germany for use at antisemitic carnivals held in various cities following the Nazi rise to power. During the 1930s, popular carnivals were held in Nazi Germany, particularly in southern and western Germany. These carnivals featured processions of people dressed as Jews with grotesque characteristics and displays of an antisemitic nature, with participants wearing masks depicting stereotypical Jewish faces and similar caricatures. There is photographic documentation from the carnival held in Cologne in 1934 showing Nazis parading in costumes with long-nosed masks over their faces. During such processions, SA men also forced Jews to carry antisemitic signs directed against themselves, bearing slogans such as “Germans do not buy from Jews, ” and similar messages, as an act of public humiliation. Likewise, during those years, antisemitic displays and signs denigrating Jews were regularly exhibited at the traditional Eierbetteln festival in the town of Leißling. Size: 14×20 cm. Very good condition.
