Netzach Israel – The First Four Issues of the Monthly Published by the Rescue Committee for the Surviving Remnant in Germany – Including the Issue Announcing the Declaration of Independence - Netzach Israel – מאנאטליכע אויסגאבע פון ועד ההצלה, פאר שארית הפליטה אין גלות דייטשלאנד [Netzach Israel – Monthly Publication of the Vaad Hatzalah for the Surviving Remnant in Exile in Germany]. Munich, 5708 [1948]. Issues Nos. 1–4. Yiddish and Hebrew. The first four issues of the monthly published by the Vaad Hatzalah for She’erit Ha-Pletah in Germany – Munich, May–September 1948 – Jewish education in the DP camps and the establishment of the State of Israel – including the rare “Long Live the State of Israel” issue of June 1948, published following the Declaration of Independence. The first four issues of Netzach Israel, Meticulous Jewish periodical published in Munich by the Vaad Hatzalah for Holocaust survivors and She’erit Ha-Pletah in Germany. The present issues appeared in May, June, August, and September 1948, at a time when tens of thousands of survivors were still living in displaced persons camps in Germany, while at the same time large-scale immigration to the newly established State of Israel was beginning. The periodical was devoted primarily to rebuilding Jewish life through education, Torah study, and the strengthening of religious identity among the children and youth of She’erit Ha-Pletah. The most important issue in the collection is No. 2, June 1948, which opens with a special page headed “Long Live the State of Israel!”, featuring blue-and-white Israeli flags and portraits of Rabbi Isaac Herzog, Rabbi Moshe Shapira, Rabbi Yehuda Leib Fishman, and Rabbi Yitzhak Meir Levin. The issue opens with an article by Rabbi Naftali Baruch entitled “The People of Israel Lives!”, addressing the historic establishment of the State of Israel shortly before. The inaugural issue, published in May 1948, features on its cover a photograph of children studying, with the heading “Dedicated to Education, ” and beneath the photograph: “For they are our life and the length of our days...” All the issues include articles and photographs dealing with life in the DP camps, the strengthening of Torah study, the Jewish festivals, and developments in the young State of Israel. The present issues include articles by prominent rabbis and public figures (some of whom had died before the Holocaust, some were murdered during it, and others survived), among them Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin, Rabbi Isaac Herzog, Rabbi Elchanan Wasserman, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Avigdor Amiel, Rabbi Gershon Liebman, Rabbi Meir Berlin, Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel, Rabbi Ephraim Oshry, David Zaritsky, and others. Rare photographs of rabbis and Holocaust survivors appear on the covers and throughout the issues. Netzach Israel forms an important part of the extensive press produced by She’erit Ha-Pletah in postwar Germany. Alongside reports on life in the DP camps, periodicals of this kind served as instruments for education, communal organization, and the restoration of cultural and religious continuity following the destruction of the Jewish communities of Europe. The fact that the present series begins specifically in May 1948 gives it an additional historical dimension: the inaugural issue appeared in the month in which the State of Israel was established, while the following three issues accompanied the first months of its existence. 4 complete issues. Very good condition.
