Collection of Cigarette Cards for the Album Germany Awakens – Berlin, 1933 - Collection of 39 Cigarette Cards for the Album Deutschland erwacht – “Germany Awakens: The Rise, Struggle and Victory of the Nazi Party”, issued as a propagandistic display of the Nazi Party’s rise to power. Berlin, 1933. Cards featuring color and black-and-white photographs documenting Adolf Hitler’s consolidation of power and the rise of the Nazi Party. The photographs were taken by Heinrich Hoffmann, the Nazi Party’s official Reich photographer and Adolf Hitler’s personal photographer, and were intended for mounting in the album Deutschland erwacht (“Germany Awakens”), designed by Wilfrid Bade and published in 1933. The cards dramatically document Nazi Party events and the various visual and ceremonial devices employed to attract and mobilize public support. They record the growing power of the Führer and the enthusiastic response of the German public to the Nazi Party and its imagery and rituals – flags, mass street parades, symbols, bands, communal singing, the Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend), and other means used to foster cohesion among members and supporters of the movement. Such cards had a considerable influence particularly on German youth, many of whom were first exposed to Nazi ideology during their teenage years and later served the regime, including in the SS during World War II. The cards required to complete the album were distributed serially in cigarette packs. Cards from this series are also displayed in the permanent exhibition of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Cards in two formats: 12×8 cm and larger cards measuring 17×13 cm (the album was designed to accommodate both sizes). Various non-consecutive numbers. Overall condition: good.
