Toba Emperor on his Mule Cloisonnè complete with jade - Toba Emperor on his Mule Cloisonnè complete with jade Wonderful enamelled bronze Cloisonné from the Meiji period (1868-1912), depicting the emperor-poet Go-Toba (後鳥羽天皇 Go-Toba-tennō, 6 August 1180 – 28 March 1239), of which Robert H. Brower, in his work “ Ex-Emperor Go-Toba's Secret Teachings”: Go-Toba no in Gokuden (Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies, Vol. 32. (1972), pp.5-70), writes: “Perhaps the most talented of Japan’s many poet-emperors, Go-Toba was also an astute and sensitive critic. (Ivi, p. 5).” Here he is depicted on the back of his mule, on his way to exile in Oki Province, a group of inhospitable islands in the Sea of Japan off the northwestern coast of Honshu. One of his poems, composed not long after Go-Toba's arrival in his place of exile, reads: “Mi no uki wa Toubeki hito mo Towanu yo ni Aware ni kinaku Hototogisu kana. In such a world, Where those who ought to ask do not inquire About my wretchedness, Howtouching that the timid woodthrush Still comes and sings at his appointed time. (Ivi, p. 11).” The sculpture is complete with the scroll, made of ”mutton fat” jade, which the poet Go-Toba holds open in his hands. The inscriptions on both sides read: 帐本 (accounting register, debt book); 难粘月得涂 (difficult to get water from the moon). These words mean that it is difficult to get money from those who do not have any.
