Under the guidance of her father, she acquired the skills and knowledge of a southern painter. In 1881, at the age of 20, she moved to Tokyo without permission because she wanted to learn to draw, and later lived with Haruko Okuhara (1837-1913), a painter from the South who was a good friend of Hakuryu, and she began to paint. Soon after, she returned home and married, putting down roots in her hometown, and after Hakuryu's death, she began to produce many works. In 1890, she received a second prize at the Naniwa Gakuga exhibition for “Black Bamboo Drawing, ” and the following year, she exhibited “Yamadera Bell Voice Drawing” at the Toto Private Nippon Seishu Painting Association and won third prize. In her later years, she lived in Omachi, Nagai City. Every year, Bunkyo no Mori Nagai holds a special exhibition titled “Artists with a Connection to Nagai, ” which features artists such as painters and poets who have ties to the local area.
