[ACQUAPENDENTE / TREVISO]. [Colónia (Coloniae Agrippinae), Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1600] - [ACQUAPENDENTE / TREVISO]. Aquapendens / Tarvisium. Ex archetypo Lodovici Toeput, delineavit et communicavit Georgius Houfnaglius. [Cologne ( Coloniae Agrippinae ), Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1600]. Engraving; 425 × 545 mm. Sheet with two horizontal views: at top, “Aquapendente”, showing the small city of Acquapendente, on the road between Siena and Rome, set on rocky escarpments, with valley, winding road and a few figures of travellers in the foreground; at bottom, “Tarvisi” (Treviso), a panoramic view of the walled city, its towers and bell towers silhouetted against the hills in the background, with peasants and travellers in contemporary dress, carts and horsemen in the foreground, and a numeric cartouche identifying the main buildings. Indication of cardinal points (“Oriens”, “Meridies”) at the image margin. On verso, descriptive text in Latin, in two columns, under the headings TARVISIVM and AQVAPENDENS , with page number 63. The composition derives from a drawing by Ludovico Toeput (Ludwig Tiepolo), reinterpreted by Joris Hoefnagel ( Georgius Houfnaglius ), one of the principal draughtsmen of the series Civitates orbis terrarum by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, the monumental urban atlas published in several volumes and editions in Cologne between 1572 and c. 1640. The present sheet forms part of volume V, largely devoted to Italian cities.
